Neuer Calf Injury Adds Twist to Germany Comeback Story Days Before Squad Reveal
Bayern Munich have diagnosed Manuel Neuer with a left-calf muscle problem after his substitution against Köln. Per Florian Plettenberg the issue is not serious, and the 40-year-old is still on track to be Germany's number one for the 2026 World Cup. Julian Nagelsmann names the final 26 on May 21.
B ayern Munich have confirmed that Manuel Neuer is dealing with a muscle problem in his left calf, an injury sustained when he was substituted off in the match against 1. FC Köln. The news lands less than a week before head coach Julian Nagelsmann is due to publish the final 26-man Germany squad for the 2026 World Cup on May 21, and only days after reports that the 40-year-old had been convinced to come out of international retirement.
A scare, but no serious damage
Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, posting on X, said the injury carries no serious consequences and that Neuer is expected to recover quickly enough not to threaten his World Cup involvement. Bayern's in-house medical update echoed that read. For Nagelsmann, the most important data point is the recovery clock, not the headline: the federation's 26-man list will sit on his desk well before the calf is fully back to match sharpness.
Why Nagelsmann turned back to Neuer
Neuer retired from international football in August 2024, but the picture in goal behind him refused to settle. Marc-André ter Stegen was earmarked as the natural successor and was Nagelsmann's preferred starter for the tournament. Shortly after his move to Girona he suffered a severe hamstring tear and tendon damage in his left thigh, underwent surgery in February and is ruled out of the World Cup with a four-to-five-month recovery window. Oliver Baumann took the gloves during qualifying and Alexander Nübel sits as backup, but neither has nailed the job down.
Asked publicly about Neuer, Nagelsmann has stuck to a tight script. "Neuer retired of his own free will, he has repeated that several times and that is why it is not even useful to constantly discuss it. The list won't be published, so I won't comment on it. What I can say is that there are a lot of players on it, because there are 55 of them," he told ZDF-Sportstudio.
The Bayern season that made the call obvious
Vincent Kompany kept Neuer as Bayern's number one all season, and the contract extension to 2027 underscored the club's read on his form. The Champions League title eluded the Bavarians but the 40-year-old's shot-stopping plus distribution made him one of the standout keepers in Europe. If Nagelsmann does name him in the 26 on May 21, Neuer would be on course for a fifth World Cup, a status only a handful of players in tournament history have reached, with the Bayern captain restored to the position the federation has been struggling to lock down.
